The
Style "H" was the top-of-the-line orchestrion offered by the J.P.
Seeburg Piano Company. Introduced in 1913, the "H" is an imposing
instrument, both physically as well as musically. It is the most
ornate of the American built orchestrions.
The
cabinet features a large overhanging top, ten backlit art glass
panels along with three art glass lamps, and two carved statues
representing "Strength" and "Beauty."
Seeburg
advertised the H as the greatest art product in automatic
instruments. Orchestral effect of a 10 piece orchestra.
Instrumentation includes a piano (with mandolin attachment) that
features a solo mechanism to allow individual pipe rank and/or
xylophone solos, two ranks of pipes (32 each, flute and violin),
22-note xylophone, snare drum, bass drum with tympani effect,
castanets, cymbal, and triangle, all with automatic expression
control operating from the large scale H music rolls.
This
instrument was rebuilt by D.C. Ramey Piano Company in 1989.
The
piano, xylophone, pipes, roll frame, drive mechanism, coin
mechanism, motor and many smaller parts are original. The cabinet is
an exact copy of an original, made with the same materials and
construction techniques. The art glass was made by Drehobl
Bros.,
the original manufacturers of art glass for Seeburg. Twelve
re-cut Style H music rolls are included (more are
available).
